Chris Hamlett / Henry Luther & The Blackouts / Kathy Zhou [Small Room-Downstairs]

etix Chris 117011721160684

Raised in Galivants Ferry, South Carolina, Henry Luther began performing solo in the Columbia area in 2018.  His solo act began attracting attention through a combination of witty stage banter, clever but poignant songs, harmonica flourishes, and tours of the Southeast.  After the release of two solo live albums, he began performing with the Blackouts, a rotating cast of friends and multi-instrumentalists who help to reinvent the songs with every live performance.  After a brief hiatus while Henry finished his master’s degree in history, the Blackouts hit the ground running in 2023, releasing a live album called “Live at Fresh Brewed” in February and dropping their “From a Tiny Desk” EP in March, featuring songs from a live session that produced their 2023 NPR Tiny Desk Contest submission.  They are currently working on a follow-up to their last studio album, tentatively titled Highway 321 in Mono, to be released in 2024.

https://scrunchies.bandcamp.com/   Scrunchies is a post-everything rock n roll trio from Minneapolis, MN that brings a loud & energetic live set, recalling the messy and cathartic energy of late-80s grunge, art rock, and post-punk bands with heavy and melodic songs and surrealistic lyrics.  They have toured extensively and have played with bands such as Screaming Females and Otoboke Beaver, and recently toured with Built to Spill.   Their upcoming album, Colossal, is Scrunchies’ third LP. It was recorded by Steve Albini in October 2023 at Electrical Audio in Chicago, and mastered by Greg Obis at Chicago Mastering Services. Colossal will be released Aug 23, 2024 on Learning Curve Records.

Bobby Mahoney / River City Tanlines / The Narrows / Zoe Dominguez [Small Room-Downstairs]

If you could distill Bobby Mahoney’s flourishing career down to a single moment, it might well have happened in the middle of a blistering set at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park. The crowd was bouncing along to a thunderous backbeat and Mahoney – the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist – was blasting his way through another fiery solo on his battered Gibson SG. With fans in a frenzy and the song at a crescendo, he looked back to the Pony’s stage manager and flashed a sweat-drenched, mile-wide grin that said it all in an instant; Bobby Mahoney was exactly where he was meant to be. It’s a moment that thousands dream about but few experience, and it’s a moment Bobby Mahoney didn’t arrive at without putting in the work.  Bridging the gap between the stereotypical teenage desire and musical reality requires dedication, belief, talent and drive; qualities he’s always had in great supply.
